Joe’s Color Noise adds random color noise to an image without having to composite an extra track or nest clips. The filter includes extensive controls for choosing RGB or YUV colors to include in the noise mix, scaling the size of noise particles, pre-blurring the noise before applying and full compositing controls for building the final image.
Scaled Noise
Scaling the noise particles has two positive side effects. First, the particles look better on video output. Single pixel noise tends to cause dot crawl and compression problems for interlaced digital video, larger noise particles soften naturally and produce a less distracting grain effect. The second benefit is increased rendering speed. The noise routines behind this filter generate only what is needed, so scaled noise requires less processing and renders faster.

Color Noise
The color mix of applied noise can be used to tint the filtered image towards a specific hue. Below are examples of the how Joe’s Noise - Color mixes the three primary colors into the noise mix. To create noise which obliterates the image, set Amount to 400.

Controls
- Noise Amount (0.1 - 400)
- Determines how much noise to add to an image.
- Fixed Noise
- Determines whether the noise changes on every frame or stays fixed for the duration of the effect.
- Scale Noise (100 - 1000%)
- Increases the size of the noise particles.
- Blur Noise (0 - 10)
- Blurs the noise before compositing it back into the image. A slight blur can prevent the noise from shimmering on a video monitor.
- Monochrome
- Restricts colors to black and white. The RGB Color sliders have no effect when this is checked.
- Red/Gray, Green, Blue (0 - 255)
- Controls how much of each color to mix into the noise. When monochrome is checked, the red slider controls the amount of gray.
- Mode, Opacity
- Composite controls to specify how to apply the blurred image back onto the original.
Three Kinds of Noise
There are three different noise filters included with Joe’s Filters bringing a wide range of noise filtering and adjusting options to Final Cut Pro. Each plugin uses noise differently to produce unique results. Here are a few basic examples of the differences:
